World Otter Day Activities Promote Environmental Education and Connect Children with Conservation
In celebration of World Otter Day, observed on May 27, the Giant Otter Project organized a series of educational activities aimed at raising awareness about the importance of otters and giant otters for nature conservation. The initiatives took place in different regions of Brazil and engaged children and adults through interactive experiences and opportunities to learn about these species and the ecosystems they inhabit.
Otter Week Engages Visitors at the São Paulo Aquarium
From May 27 to 31, the São Paulo Aquarium, in partnership with the Giant Otter Project, hosted Otter Week, a special program dedicated to the two otter species found in Brazil: the giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) and the neotropical otter (Lontra longicaudis).
The program offered visitors an immersive experience into the world of otters and giant otters through interactive activities, educational games, a themed exhibition area, an animated video screening, and fascinating facts about the species. Throughout the week, a total of 4,890 people participated in the Otter Week, including 2,887 visitors and 2,003 students from 45 schools across the state of São Paulo.
The initiative aimed to spark interest in wildlife conservation, encourage appreciation for otters and giant otters, and inspire actions to help protect these species and their habitats.
Otter Day Brings Together Students in Poconé, Pantanal
On May 27, the Giant Otter Project also hosted Otter Day at the Environmental Education Center of Poconé (Mato Grosso State), with activities designed for students from local schools.
During the event, participants learned more about the biology, ecology, and conservation challenges faced by giant otters through the presentation “Getting to Know the Giant Otter: Between Boats, Wildlife, and Care”. Students also took part in a storytelling session based on our children’s book “Gaspar’s Fishing Adventure”. A total of 45 children participated in the activities, which aimed to connect young people with Brazil’s wildlife, stimulate curiosity about biodiversity, and foster a greater appreciation for nature.
Why Celebrate World Otter Day?
Otters and giant otters play a vital role in aquatic ecosystems. As apex predators and bioindicator species, their presence is closely associated with healthy environments, good water quality, and the availability of natural resources.
However, these species face numerous threats, including habitat loss and degradation, conflicts with human activities, and the impacts of climate change. In this context, environmental education plays a key role in raising awareness, bringing people closer to conservation, and encouraging public engagement in biodiversity protection. .
More than just a day of celebration, World Otter Day is an opportunity to strengthen the connection between people and nature, highlighting that protecting otters and giant otters also means safeguarding rivers, aquatic ecosystems, and the biodiversity upon which we all depend.
