Giant Otter Project and the Brazilian Association of Zoos and Aquariums Launch Educational Campaign at the 49th AZAB Congress
During the 49th Congress of the Brazilian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZAB), held in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, the “Giant Otter: Sentinel of the Rivers” educational campaign was officially launched. The initiative, developed by AZAB in partnership with the Giant Otter Project, aims to raise public awareness about the ecological importance of giant otters and encourage actions to conserve Brazil’s aquatic ecosystems.
The campaign will run throughout 2026 and will feature a series of educational activities, informational materials, and public engagement initiatives at AZAB-affiliated zoos and aquariums across different regions of the country, as well as through social media. The initiative seeks to increase public knowledge about the species and strengthen the connection between biodiversity conservation and the protection of water resources.
The campaign aims to bring people closer to giant otter conservation by highlighting the species’ role as a bioindicator of aquatic ecosystem health and reinforcing the need for its protection, particularly given its threatened conservation status.
Over the coming months, we will share information about the species’ ecology, behavior, and the main threats it faces, along with content that encourages positive actions in support of the conservation of rivers, streams, and wetlands. The program will also include educational activities involving zoos, aquariums, and schools in different regions of Brazil.
Putting Conservation Education in the Spotlight
In addition to the campaign launch, the Giant Otter Project also participated in the congress’s scientific program. The Project’s founder and president, Caroline Leuchtenberger, took part in the panel discussion “Education for Conservation”, where she shared experiences and reflections on awareness-raising strategies, public engagement, and promoting coexistence between people and wildlife.
The discussion brought together professionals from different institutions and fields of expertise, fostering a valuable exchange of perspectives on the role of education in species and ecosystem conservation.
Through the “Giant Otter: Sentinel of the Rivers” campaign, the Giant Otter Project and AZAB are embarking on a joint outreach effort to expand knowledge about the species, inspire positive conservation actions, and strengthen collective commitment to protecting Brazil’s aquatic environments.
