Environmental Education and Creativity: Children Learn About Giant Otters and Recycling in the Pantanal
In June, the Giant Otter Project held a special environmental education workshop at Porto Velho School, located in the Porto Jofre region of the Pantanal in Mato Grosso. The activity aimed to introduce children to the world of giant otters while promoting concepts such as recycling and environmental responsibility.
During the workshop, seven children participated in creating a sculpture of a giant otter using plastic bottles collected from the river near the school. The activity encouraged creativity, sparked interest in the local wildlife, and showed — through a playful way and accessible approach — that caring for nature can also be fun.
Raising awareness among children is essential for building a strong environmental consciousness from an early age. By learning about the local fauna—such as the giant otter, a key predator and bioindicator of aquatic ecosystem health—children develop a connection with nature and begin to understand their role as future guardians of the environment.
Additionally, by transforming discarded materials into educational toys, the workshop also promoted reflection on the conscious use of natural resources and the impact of waste on wildlife. Recycling was presented as a simple yet effective practice for protecting the Pantanal, one of Brazil’s most biodiverse and threatened biomes.
We believe that small actions like this can lead to a big impact. Children who are inspired today may become more aware and engaged adults, committed to the conservation of the Pantanal and its iconic species, such as the giant otter.
