Workshop “Giant Otters and Sustainable Tourism” in the Pantanal: Promoting the Species and Wildlife Observation Tourism
Throughout the year, we have carried out various initiatives focused on conservation and sustainable tourism in the Pantanal, organizing events, workshops, and meetings to strengthen the dialogue between tourism professionals, researchers, and local communities.
Among the actions taken, we trained 73 tourism professionals from different regions of both the southern and northern Pantanal. In these workshops, we discussed fascinating facts and behaviors of giant otters that can be explored during tourism activities, as well as presented guidelines for best practice in observing the species. We also exchanged experiences with participants, strengthening partnerships and expanding knowledge about the importance of biodiversity conservation aligned sustainable tourism.
One of the highlights of this effort was the Workshop “Giant Otters and Sustainable Tourism” , held at the Pantanal Research Base of UFMS (BEP/UFMS) in Passo do Lontra, Mato Grosso do Sul. The event brought together professionals, researchers, and wildlife tourism enthusiasts to discuss the role of giant otters not only as an emblematic species of the ecosystem but also as a key attraction for sustainable tourism in the region.
During the workshop, we emphasized how valuing giant otters can contribute to the conservation of their natural habitat and boost wildlife observation tourism. We highlighted tourism as a crucial tool for the conservation of the species, showing that responsible observation practices not only ensure the future of giant otters but also strengthen the local economy. Our goal is to ensure that tourism in the Pantanal is conducted consciously, benefiting both wildlife and the communities that relyon sustainable tourism.
The collaboration of all participants was essential to the success of these initiatives. Together, we reinforced the importance of protecting giant otters and their habitats, creating a positive impact on the conservation of the Pantanal. We continue to work on integrating conservation, sustainable tourism, and species appreciation as essential pillars for a balanced future in the region.
