“Feeding is Not Allowed” Campaign: Raising Awareness about the Importance of NOT Feeding Giant Otters
The Giant Otter Project, in partnership with SOS Pantanal and the 1st Environmental Military Police Battalion of Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), carried out an important awareness campaign in Passo do Lontra, MS, to combat the practice of feeding giant otters. While giant otters are piscivorous animals, meaning their natural diet consists mainly of fish, feeding them can harm their lives in many ways.
Feeding wild animals is illegal and dangerous, as it alters their behavior, jeopardizes their health, and increases the riskof accidents. Moreover, it can negatively affect local tourism, as these practices compromise the natural interaction that tourists should have with the local wildlife.
To raise awareness among the local community, tourists, and visitors about the impacts of this activity, the Giant Otter Project and its partners installed informative signs along the banks of the Miranda River in strategic locations, highlighting the importance of keeping giant otters in their natural habitat and respecting their instinctive behaviors. The presence of the Environmental Military Police also ensured the campaign’s effectiveness, with the support of the relevant authorities.
We thank the Passo do Lontra Park Hotel, Morro do Azeite Hotel, and UFMS for joining us in ensuring the success of this initiative. Together, we can make a difference in protecting giant otters and the Pantanal ecosystem as a whole. The impact of educational actions like this is essential to ensuring the survival of species and strengthening sustainable tourism in the region.
