Education and Conservation: Guidelines for Sustainable Giant Otter Tourism
To promote sustainable tourism and foster a harmonious coexistence between visitors and wildlife, the Giant Otter Project has launched a new initiative in the Porto Jofre region of the Mato Grosso Pantanal: the installation of educational signs with guidelines for the responsible observation of giant otters in the wild.
This initiative is the result of a partnership with the Mato Grosso State Environmental Agency (SEMA-MT) and is supported by SOS Pantanal, the tourism company Pantanal Phototours, the NGO Panthera Brazil, the jaguar ID Project, as well as local lodges and other important collaborators.
The signs were placed at strategic locations throughout the region and provide clear and accessible information so that guides, tourists, residents, and other visitors can observe giant otters without causing stress or disrupting their natural behavior. The goal is simple: to promote meaningful nature experiences that also serve as a tool for conservation.
The five key guidelines highlighted on the signs are:
- Keep a safe distance when observing a group of giant otters;
- Do not feed the animals;
- Slow down your boat in areas where the species is present, especially during the breeding season (June to September);
- Stay quiet and avoid playback (recorded sounds) to attract the animals;
- Do not disturb dens and latrines sites by climbing on them.
These recommendations are based on scientific research and over almost two decades of experience accumulated by the Giant Otter Project in the Pantanal.
