In March, our social media platforms turned into a vibrant celebration of wildlife with the launch of the naming campaign for five giant otter pups born in 2023. More than just an opportunity to name the pups, this campaign aimed to strengthen bonds with our audience and actively involve them in our species monitoring and conservation efforts.
With over 10 years of population monitoring, our database boasts more than 400 identified giant otters, and finding suitable names is becoming increasingly challenging. The public contributed suggestions for funny and creative names, some even inspired by our indigenous culture and Brazilian fauna. As the campaign progressed, we witnessed a heartfelt celebration of diversity and giant otters, with the online community coming together in support of our mission.
Thanks to the population monitoring of giant otters conducted in the Pantanal, Amazon and Cerrado regions, we have gained a better understanding of the species’ behavior and how it is coping with various threats. Additionally, we have been monitoring how certain human activities and climate change are affecting the species and the birth of pups each year.
Therefore, the pup naming campaign is a crucial action that not only contributes to monitoring the species in its natural environment but also symbolizes human empowerment in biodiversity conservation.
The participation of our followers in this naming campaign not only highlights the power of social media in raising environmental awareness but also underscores the importance of involving people of all ages in wildlife protection. The Giant Otter Project reaffirms its commitment to protecting the species and collaborating for a sustainable future where harmony between humans and nature is a reality.

The year 2023 was full of achievements that strengthened our commitment to the conservation of the giant otter and its ecosystem. Throughout the year, we engaged in a series of activities that enabled significant progress in scientific research, environmental education, science communication, and sustainable tourism, bringing us even closer to our purpose: to transform the giant otter into a symbol of a balanced ecosystem and promote human coexistence with the species and the associated biodiversity.
We conducted population monitoring, carried out scientific research, interviewed communities, and disseminated new knowledge through the publication of articles, PhD thesis, participation in national and international events, and through social media. We invested in the development of more sustainable tourism through workshops, lectures, and new partnerships. We took actions in schools, teaching values and fundamental knowledge to promote human coexistence with the giant otter, and also participated in conservation planning and the development of public policies.
However, our efforts would not have been possible without the continuous support of our partners, collaborators, volunteers, and supporters. We express our gratitude to all who joined us on this journey. We renew our commitment to continue working for the conservation of the giant otter in 2024. Together, we will build a more sustainable future where human coexistence with the giant otter is successfully achieved!
