Giant Otter Project and North Carolina Aquarium Host Immersion Program in the Pantanal
Last week, the Giant Otter Project had the pleasure of welcoming a team from the North Carolina Aquarium and faculty members from the United States for an immersive experience in the Pantanal. This annual Eco Edventure course is organized in partnership with conservation programs, and this year we were honored to serve as the host organization. Activities took place with the support of Barranco Alto Farm, one of our main research bases in the Pantanal.
It was an inspiring week of learning, knowledge exchange, and hands-on research and environmental education activities. Participants observed giant otters in their natural habitat, interpreted their behaviors and vocalizations, practiced field research techniques, and explored the ecology of one of the world’s largest and most remarkable wetlands.
The program also included a visit to Tupaciretã School, where participants learned about the students’ daily lives and took part in environmental education activities. Throughout the week, they also experienced everyday life on the farm, gaining a deeper understanding of the Pantanal and the people who live there.
The week concluded with a very special moment: a female giant otter pup, born in October 2025 and not yet named, was lovingly given the name Carolina in honor of the North Carolina Aquarium and the partnership built throughout the week.
We sincerely thank everyone who contributed to this unforgettable experience. Partnerships like this strengthen biodiversity conservation, foster the exchange of knowledge, and inspire new connections between people and nature.
