Giant Otters Return to Argentina After 40 Years in Historic Iberá Project
With great joy, we celebrate the return of giant otters to Iberá National Park (Argentina) after a four-decade absence of breeding populations. Led by Fundación Rewilding Argentina, with support from the Giant Otter Project and international partners, this conservation milestone aims to restore ecosystems by reintroducing keystone species like the giant otter.
Since 2017, the Giant Otter Project has actively collaborated in every step, from planning to post-release monitoring, with our president, Caroline Leuchtenberger, contributing as a global reference in species conservation. The release of the first group in June marks a crucial step.
Why is this return vital?
Giant otters are keystone species in aquatic ecosystems, maintaining the balance and health of rivers. Their local extinction in Argentina, caused by hunting and habitat loss, impacted the local ecosystem’s ecological dynamics. The species’ reintroduction to Esteros de Iberá restores fundamental ecological processes, but it’s a long road with challenges to ensure future viability and connection with other South American populations.
The Strength of Partnership:
Fundación Rewilding Argentina leads this project with Argentina’s National Parks Administration, the Government of the Province of Corrientes, the EAZA Giant Otter Ex Situ Programme, and global zoos that donated animals. International cooperation and joint work are essential to reversing extinction scenarios.
A Planned Process:
The project, initiated in 2017, involved detailed planning, installation of pre-release enclosures, formation of family groups, animal adaptation and preparation for wildlife, as well as reproductive and post-release monitoring protocols.
Iberá Park, with high protection, abundant prey, and few threats, is ideal for the population’s establishment, aiming to recover an extinct population.
This achievement demonstrates the power of international cooperation for conservation. Follow our social media and continue supporting the Giant Otter Project!
