Giant Otter Capture at Passo do Lontra: Monitoring Evaluates Species Health and Environmental Quality
The Giant Otter Project team recently ventured to the Passo do Lontra region, in the heart of the Pantanal in Mato Grosso do Sul, for a crucial stage of giant otter monitoring. This time, the focus was on capturing and collecting biological samples from the animals to assess the species’ health and the environmental impacts they face in the area.
One of the most memorable moments of this expedition was the capture of a solitary male, affectionately named “Cielo” in honor of the Brazilian swimmer César Cielo. Weighing 32 kg, Cielo is one of the heaviest giant otters ever monitored by the Project, second only to a male captured in 2010, who weighed 32.9 kg. Cielo’s resilience and agility surprised everyone, showing he could very well compete in a “Wild Olympics”!
The samples collected from Cielo are now being analyzed. The results will provide valuable data on his health and that of other individuals of the species inhabiting this area of the Pantanal. The analyses aim to identify possible diseases, evaluate the impact of pollutants in their habitat, and further understand the genetics of local giant otter populations. This knowledge is essential for developing more effective conservation strategies and protecting the giant otter, an endangered species vital to the ecological balance of aquatic ecosystems.
This expedition was made possible thanks to the support of key partners such as the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz), who provided critical supplies for the analyses, as well as Bourgelat Veterinary Clinic and Ozone Pets, which offered technical and logistical support.
The Giant Otter Project extends its heartfelt thanks to all partners and supporters who contributed to this essential mission. Through joint efforts, we can create conservation strategies that truly protect the species and secure the future of giant otters in the Pantanal.
